Cancer Interrupted

There are many wonderful reasons to drink tea- it is healthy, delicious, all-natural, and one of our favorite reasons is that tea is credited with lowering the risk of diseases such as cancer! All tea has anticancer properties, but green tea in particular has the highest levels of polyphenols EGCG. Green tea has been used for healing in China for over 4000 years! It is unfermented so it has unique health properties that are especially beneficial for combating cancer. In this blog, we will take a look at what modern research can say about tea’s cancer fighting abilities.

Polyphenol Antioxidants

Tea polyphenols are bioactive plant compounds that include catechins- these are compounds that have shown to prohibit cell tumor growth, prevent programmed cell death, and naturally fight cancer-causing free radicals in your body.

The antioxidant polyphenols in tea will literally kill cancer cells with absolutely no ill effect on healthy cells! The National Cancer Institute has many studies indicating that Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant antioxidant in green tea; it accounts for at least half of its total catechin content, and is the most powerful anti-cancer antioxidant in tea! Green tea contains 35-52% (measured in weight percent of extract of solids) catechins and flavonols, protecting the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can damage biological structures in your cells, such as DNA and proteins. Like vitamins C and E, antioxidants such as EGCG limit the damage free radicals cause by chemically neutralizing them.

According to research published in Biochemical Pharmacology in 2011, EGCG research has proven to inhibit tumor growth in a variety of test-tube studies involving cancer of the stomach, lungs, liver, breast and colon.

Immune System
The catechins in tea have shown to boost immune function. Better immunity means you will be healthier overall, and being in optimum health means that your body will be able to better fight off infection and disease.

Detoxification Effect

Studies have shown that green tea’s detoxifying effect help it to protect against cancer. For example, smoking incidents are high in Japan, yet lung cancer is much less prevalent in Japan than it is in North America. There is speculation that because green tea is widely consumed throughout Japan, that its detoxifying benefits make the harmful effects of smoking a little less damaging.

UV Rays

Green tea also protects the body against damage from ultraviolet light rays. The catechins in tea prevent the inflammatory and immune-suppressing responses associated with exposure to UV rays.

To obtain the powerful cancer fighting benefits of tea, we suggest drinking 4 cups of tea a day. Matcha is an excellent choice, since it is whole leaf tea that you consume- giving you the most powerful results.

We wish you the best in health and tea!
