Fighting Osteoporosis with Oolong Tea

Research shows that long-term consumption of oolong tea prevents osteoporosis by increasing the mineral density in bones! In case we needed another reason to absolutely adore oolong tea!

Osteoporosis is a common disorder in which the bones become porous, brittle and subject to fracture, owing to loss of calcium and other mineral components, sometimes resulting in pain. It is generally age related, and common in older persons, primarily postmenopausal women, but it is also associated with long-term steroid therapy and certain endocrine disorders.

Oolong tea has long been incredibly popular in Taiwan and mainland China. Oolong tea is a genre of partially oxidized teas, that are generally oxidized somewhere between a green and black tea (5% to 85%). Oolong tea in particular is high in minerals, it can prevent heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases.

Studies have shown that long-term oolong consumers have healthier bones. Oolong tea protects the teeth against decay, strengthens the skeletal structure and prevents osteoporosis. People who consistently drink oolong tea retain the minerals from healthy foods consumed. It has been discovered that oolong naturally contains magnesium and calcium in its leaves. The results of this study state that those who drank oolong tea for over 10 years were significantly less likely to lose their bone mineral density (BMD) over that span of time!

*  Note that the tannins in tea can somewhat inhibit iron and calcium absorption in the body, so we recommend that if you take calcium supplements to take it a few hours before or after you enjoy your oolong tea!
