Dan Cong Ya Shi – "Duck Shit Aroma" Phoenix Oolong

Our exceptional Dan Cong Ya Shi oolong is harvested from eco-friendly tea gardens at altitudes of 800 to 1, 200 meters, where misty clouds, fertile soil and abundant minerals create an ideal environment for thriving tea trees. The trees belong to the famous "Ya Shi Xiang, " or "Duck Shit Aroma, " variety — an amusing and unusual name!

Don't worry: this oolong doesn't smell or taste anything like its name. Legend says farmers gave it the unappealing nickname to discourage others from stealing their prized tea bushes. The quirky name has only added to its fame, and today it's one of the most celebrated Dan Cong (Phoenix) oolongs.

I enjoyed this, it's not bad. The leaves are large and pleasant to look at. The best part of the experience brewing this tea IMO is the wet leaf scent - like stewed plums, though this fades after the first few infusions.

I find that this tea really needs that boiling heat to bring the best flavors out of it, but also really needs the short steep time or you will overdo it. First one instant (with a slow pour), 2nd one 5 seconds. Nicely floral and fruity, but does have some astringency/bitterness that comes in, and some drying mouthfeel that isn't always pleasant. The liquor is a yellow toned amber that is cloudy and I could see some of the oils in my cup.

One thing I did like about this tea is that the scent clings to the empty glass fairness cup and porcelain drinking cups, and that makes for a nice sensory experience there.

I only gave it a 4 because you need to use a lot of leaves to have a good flavor (I used 8g for 140ml when I usually use 5g for other teas) there are some things quality wise that could be better, and it doesn't seem to have much longevity. That said, it's good for the price and it won't go to waste in my household. We bought 5 teas from this site and this doesn't wow me as much as the others.

Quite good. Lightly earthy, floral, sweet, mineral, low-mid astringency so still fairly smooth.

This is a good Oolong
